Oscars 2018 Red Carpet Dresses

OSCARS 2018 RED CARPET DRESSES

Oscars 2018 Rita Moreno wears same dressBelieve it or not, the reason we love red carpet events so much is not simply to look at pretty dresses, rather to be INSPIRED.

First though, we would like to ask you all to stand for just a moment and applaud Rita Moreno for the breaking the mould oh-so boldly by wearing the same dress to the Oscars… twice (GASP)! In 1962 Rita Moreno selected the fabric herself and commissioned the dress for the acceptance of her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in West Side Story. With a modified neckline for a modernised touch, the 86 year old actress returned to the red carpet with her beloved dress and looked as beautiful as ever. So THANK YOU Rita, for showing us all that we can indeed bring out the classics, and can most certainly wear the same dress twice.

Indeed, the display of positively resplendent robes at the Oscars 2018 did not disappoint, and we were delighted at some of the clear and quite distinctive trends on the red carpet this weekend…

METALLIC DRESSES

From halter neck, to strapless to asymmetrical, metallics have made it big on the red carpets this year. It seems that anything goes in terms of style, as long as it’s metallic! Seriously though, hats of to Ashley Graham for making the sexy-cyborg look so utterly amazing!

BALLROOM GOWNS

Have we mentioned already how much we love Balenciaga? Well we do. And so do most of us, even if we don’t KNOW we do. Balenciaga is all about shape. Creating shape where there is none, or embracing shape that is there. This is why we are such big fans of this ballroom gown style. Glamorously, elegantly feminine.

ROMANCE

Another strong trend to have stepped onto the red carpet at the Oscars is the incredibly ornate, romantically girly trend. With pastel colours, frills, silks, flowers and soft layers, this would be great place to gather inspiration for bridesmaids-to-be. Whilst it may not be our favourite dress, we particularly love the balance that Selma Hayek’s faux-wrap style gives her heavy bust.

SMOOTH & SLEEK

Offering a beautifully classic yet strong and edgy style, this is perhaps why the smooth and sleek look seems to have appealed to so many of our more mature celebrities. With Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren and Alison Janney (amongst others) all opting for this look; we love the Strong Woman stance it gives whilst offering a simultaneously conservative yet feminine appeal.
